Is there anew Tomb Raider game in 2024? This isn’t the right question to ask, as the Tomb Raider I-III Remastered collection came out in February, meaning we already got a new Lara Croft game this year. So, really, it’s now a question of whether or not we can expect another one in 2024 or if the next Tomb Raider game won’t be until 2025 and beyond.
As I already mentioned, we have had a Tomb Raider game this year, technically three of them, and one look at our Tomb Raider I-III Remastered review shows you that it’s a fun time – how could revisiting Lara’s original adventures be anything but nostalgia-fuelled fun?
Is there a new Tomb Raider game in 2024?
The Tomb Raider I-III Remastered collection came out on February 14, 2024, meaning we already had a new Tomb Raider game this year. If you want to be pedantic about it, you can argue that they aren’t really ‘new.’ This trilogy originally came out in the 90s, with Tomb Raider in 1996, Tomb Raider II in 1997, and Tomb Raider III in 1998 – there was also a Tomb Raider game in 1999, but The Last Revelation didn’t make the cut for this collection of action games.
However, while that decision caused confusion at the time, in October 2024, Aspyr revealed that it’s releasing a second remastered collection for Lara, this time for games IV to VI, meaning we do get to go through the fourth game once more after all. The other two games in this collection are Tomb Raider: Chronicles and Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness – admittedly, this may feel like a bizarre choice given this isn’t the most popular trio of games in the franchise.
As much as we want a brand new Tomb Raider game, it doesn’t appear as though we can expect one in 2024, but that’s not to say that we won’t get a surprising announcement before the year is over. Surprising announcements can come at the drop of a hat; some games don’t even need a showcase to be announced these days (though Tomb Raider not appearing in one and having a social media announcement would be surprising).
We do know that Crystal Dynamics is working on a new Tomb Raider game, tentatively titled Tomb Raider Next. Considering how enjoyable the Survivor trilogy is, we can’t wait to see what the developer does with the leading lady next. Speaking of that trilogy, we wouldn’t say no to ending up on Nintendo Switch.
New Tomb Raider game platforms
Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered is coming to Nintendo Switch, PS4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, just like the Tomb Raider I-III Remastered collection did. However, we can’t say what platforms a brand-new (not remastered) Tomb Raider game will come to. The Nintendo Switch 2 is to be more powerful than the current console, so perhaps Crystal Dynamics will consider the hardware for Lara’s future adventures.
What will the new Tomb Raider game be like?
This is a little bit on the nose, but the new Tomb Raider game will involve searching tombs. It includes exploring caves and ruins, all while you fight for survival and search for historic artifacts. No matter what type of Tomb Raider game you play, the basics are the same: Lara has her trusty pistols (most of the time, don’t get me started on their absence throughout the Survivor trilogy), some pals who are ready to help her, and an evil organization who wants to doom the world – well, cause some sort of the problem.
You can expect plenty of action and combat, more puzzles than might feel necessary, and an inviting story that has you guessing what happens next. Well, if you played the original games, you already know what’s going to happen in the Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered collection.
The more I talk about the prospect of a new Tomb Raider game, the more I can’t wait to see what Crystal Dynamics is cooking. It has a solid reputation with the franchise, being responsible for entries such as Tomb Raider: Legend, Tomb Raider, Underworld, Tomb Raider (2013), and Rise of the Tomb Raider, so Lara’s future outing is in good hands.
New Tomb Raider game release date speculation
Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered releases on February 14, 2025, sounds like a wonderful Valentine’s Day if you ask me. As for what Crystal Dynamics is working on, we’re still waiting for the official announcement of its new Tomb Raider game. As such, we can’t even begin to guess when the release date might be, so we won’t, but we’ll do our best to keep you updated as soon as more information on the next Tomb Raider game comes to life.
