Buneary Evolution Guide

Buneary’s evolution, Lopunny, isn’t the first normal-type Pokémon that comes to mind, yet it can be a bit of an unsung hero in the midst of battle. Believe it or not, Lopunny has more to offer than the surprising amount of sexualization that surrounds this poor creature. We don’t judge, but it’s nice to look at how it performs in battle and give some thought to this Pokémon’s combat skills.

Beyond being able to get your hands on a good normal-type, knowing how to evolve Buneary means you can get another entry in your Pokédex, even if you don’t intend to use Lopunny on your team. If all you want is to make the professor proud by filling out your electronic device, we also have  Scyther evolution, Rockruff’s evolution, Budew evolution, and Slowpoke evolution guides for you to read.

Here’s what you need to know about Buneary’s evolution.

Who is Buneary?

While Buneary looks cute, it has enough power in its ears to make an adult cry with a single smack from its ears. In fact, Buneary can extend its ears with enough force to break a boulder – no wonder it reduces adults to tears. As for where it hails from, Buneary is originally part of the fourth-generation line-up, meaning it comes from Sinnoh.

Where can I catch Buneary?

You need to have the gen 4 Pokémon to evolve it, but it’s not much of an issue getting one due to how early and frequently they appear in the regions they call home. Just a standard pokéball will do the trick, though you do need to consider a great ball in the later stages of the game.

You can find and catch a Buneary in any of the following Switch games and locations:

  • Sword and Shield – though not available to catch in the base game, you can find Buneary in the Fields of Honor and Challenge Beach through the Isle of Armor expansion
  • Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl – Buneary is in Eterna Forest and the Grand Underground (Spacious Cave, Grassland Cave, Riverbank Cave, Sunlit Cavern, Icy Cave, Glacial Cavern, Water Cavern, and Whiteout Cave)
  • Legends: Arceus – Buneary is in the Obsidian Fieldlands (The Heartwood) and Alabaster Icelands (Bonechill Wastes and Snowfall Hot Springs)

How do I evolve Buneary?

Buneary’s evolution relies on friendship. Once you reach a high friendship level, it evolves into Lopunny. There are numerous ways to boost your relationship, the most common of which is to battle and win with Buneary. However, the later games also allow you to make food and play with them.

Do male Buneary evolve?

Yes, male Buneary also evolve into Lopunny; there is no gender lock on the evolution, unlike Pokémon such as Salazzle and Gallade. To get Salandit’s evolution, you need to have a female one, and to get the second final Ralts’ evolution, your Pokémon has to be a male.

Where can I catch Lopunny?

Some Pokémon games allow you to catch Lopunny, though not all of them do. If you decide to pursue it, we suggest you read up on the normal Pokémon weakness and grab some great balls or ultra balls. The latter is essential if you hope to catch an Alpha Lopunny in PLA.

The games you can catch Lopunny in are:

  • Sword and Shield – Lopunny wanders the land in Fields of Honor and the Soothing Wetlands from the Isle of Armor expansion
  • Legends: Arceus – An Alpha Lopunny is in the Obsidian Fieldlands (The Heartwood), or a regular one is in the Crimson Mirelands (space-time distortions) and Alabaster Icelands (Bonechill Wastes and Snowfall Hot Spring)

How do I evolve Buneary in Pokémon Go?

Evolving Buneary in Pokémon Go is as simple as giving it 50 candies. That’s it. There is no special evolution stone or item; it is just some good old candy. The only challenge here is catching enough Buneary to reach 50, though it’s not like they’re an uncommon creature to find.
